Alcohol Consumption

 Recommendations

When it comes to drinking alcohol, moderation is key. It is less important what you drink (beer or wine) than how you drink. Having seven drinks on a Saturday and no other drinks the rest of the week is not the same as having one drink a day.

Health Impact

Even moderate drinking can cause serious health issues, but heavy drinking (5 or more drinks on the same occasion on five or more days in one month) and binge drinking (5 or more drinks on the same occasion at least once a month) can cause the most severe impact to your health. Drinking is linked to the following health issues:

  • Liver Damage

  • Heart Disease

  • Brain and Nervous System Problems

  • Anemia

  • Cancer

  • Seizures

  • Gout

  • Infections

  • Digestive Problems

  • Sleep Issues
